Contrary to what social media says, moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle is all about being patient and making small changes that build up. One of the easiest ways to move towards a sustainable lifestyle is to look at what you already have and see if you can switch to a sustainable alternative. Here you will find some easy swaps that you can make in your bathroom!

The bathroom is an easy room to make swaps in because there are many products that people are not emotionally attached to. Most of the products in a typical bathroom are in plastic containers and we all know that plastic is the biggest pollutant in the ocean.

1. Shampoo and Conditioner

Shampoos and conditioners that come in plastic bottles are very wasteful because most of the time the plastic is hard to recycle. The best alternative option is to buy shampoo and conditioner bars. They come in little packaging which is usually compostable or recyclable. Bars also last much longer so the price ends up being less than bottled shampoo and conditioner. Since bars are much smaller than bottles, their carbon footprint tends to be a lot less than bottles. They can be a little hard to get used to but once you find the one that works for your hair, it is amazing!

You can find shampoo and conditioner bars in most grocery stores. The best ones I’ve found are from LUSH Cosmetics. They are mostly vegan, and the company is very active in sustainability.

2. Soap

Body soaps and hand soaps are other easy things you can swap for a bar. This was one of the easiest swaps in the bathroom for me because I was used to using a loofa in the shower. The liquid soap would fall while applying it to the loofa so when I switched to a bar, it was much easier to avoid waste and it lasts FOREVER!

You can also find bar soaps all around. Many times you can find them at farmer’s markets or art shows. My favorite body and hand soap is the Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap All One in peppermint.

3. Makeup Removers

Makeup remover rounds, cotton balls, and makeup remover can all be replaced by Make Up Eraser. This amazing product is just a piece of fabric that you get wet and wipe your make up off with. This will get everything off including waterproof mascara and lipstick. Once it is dirty all you need to do is throw it in the wash! This product drastically reduces your waste!

You can sometimes find them in grocery stores or pharmacy stores. I got mine on Amazon (Makeup Removing Cloths). It does come in plastic packaging but the waste that is prevented with the product was worth it enough for me.

Besides being a more sustainable option, all of these swaps are better for your skin too because most of the time they are made from natural, vegan, cruelty-free, organic, ingredients (in any combination if not all). So in the end you’ll end up with healthier skin while saving the planet!
